There are three categories: Income, Expenses, and Other (transfers, repayments, and investments). 1. Income is colored blue on the category selection screen. (Includes income and wages, as well as their child categories. See the image below) 2. Expenses is colored green on the category selection screen. This is for things other than transfers and repayments (and their child categories). 3. The "other" category is for transfers, repayments, and investments (and their child categories) only. 

Details of category 1, the income category, do not appear on the expenses screen (green). Category 3, the "other" category, is designed to be used for things like transfers between bank accounts and money withdrawn from your credit card, and therefore will not be shown in either the income or expenses screens. Also, as the values of stocks and investment trusts are not exact until they have been sold, we've made it so that these are not shown as income either.

Only category 2 is shown on the expenses screen. Details of category 1, the income category, do not appear on the expenses screen (green).

Additionally, there are parent and child categories, and the parent category's type is inherited by the child category. The same is true for categories that are created by the user. (For example: The parent category "Utility Costs" has the child categories "Electricity", "Gas", and "Water".) If a new category is created with expenses as the parent, it will appear on the expenses screen even if it actually contains income, and the income category (including its child categories) will not appear on the expenses screen.
